Californian, artist, Shawn Griggs has been creating art for over 20 years. He received his degree in studio/graphic arts from Humboldt State University in 1994 and has become proficient in illustration, graphic design, watercolors, and most recently oil painting. What is your name and when did you start making art? My name is Shawn Griggs and I have been making art professionally since 2000... I have been drawing since early childhood. Why did you start making art? I have always been into creating art... I never wanted to be anything else but an artist when I was a kid... in a lot of ways it was great as I never struggled with the question "What do I want to do with my life?" I always knew I would do something with art. My work really does come from my heart and I feel that is why it is appealing to others... I think they see that whether they know it or not. What are some of your favorite moments in your career? I feel I have created a great little gig for myself, so the whole thing is pretty wonderful. It is simple by design... family, art and surf... thats it! I try to live by those three things and dedicate as much time to them as possible. My career includes inspiration from all three. As far as individual moments go, I love going on surf trips, coming home and making paintings from that trip, then selling those pieces. There is something really gratifying about painting experiences that others can relate with enough to want on their wall. Finishing big pieces is always incredible as usually a lot of time goes into them and its cool to see the end result. Getting into my new gallery/studio space last year was pretty fantastic as well. What do you think is the future of your industry? Unfortunately I live in a somewhat sheltered area of California and cant really have my finger on the pulse of what is going on in the bigger art scenes... that being said, I have been very impressed with how Surf art has grown over the last decade and see it growing even more. In the meantime, regardless of what happens in the industry, I will keep painting! If you could, what is one thing would you do differently? No regrets. I am pretty happy with things and the direction I am going... I wouldn't be where I am right now if everything in my past hadn't happened exactly the way they did, good and bad. What is the next big project you have planned? My son (Griffin 9) and I made this really fun board game that I am hopefully going to have ready for the holidays... Its REALLY fun... I am also working on a collaborative project with a handful of other musicians and artists thats pretty interesting... I will keep you posted...
