Recently we showed you a collection of vintage swim suits that were featured as part of LACMA's Pacific Standard Time show. Now we want to present two surf boards that were part of the exhibition. Greg Noll learned to make surfboards in the Manhattan Beach shop of early legend Dale Velzy. Renowned for his shaping and glassing prowess, Noll was also known as "Da Bull" for surfing enormous waves off the coast of Hawaii. This 1960 board (above right) features a sophisticated double stringer (the wood inlay) and Noll's signature "chopstick" fin. The board (about left) was made by the legendary Hobart 'Hobie' Alter in 1961.
